Lyle was the youngest of three boys raised on a farm in Ogden, Kansas. His first interests were horses and cattle. He learned general mechanics by putting up hay in the summer & working on various pieces of equipment.
His love of Autosports didn't get played out until a sunny September afternoon at the Kansas State Fair in Hutchinson when Lyle skipped a cattle show to find out what the roar of horsepower was coming from. After hopping the fence he quickly realized this dirt racin' thing might be for him.
On his return to home he franticly started to piece together an old Street Stock his older brother Cliff had attempted to race a few years prior. Lacking only a motor he made short time finding one that would work. Only weeks before had his parents parked a LTD wagon with a 460 engine & transmission. In no time Lyle had it stuffed in his Torino and headed for Plaza Speedway! Without his parents any the wiser Lyle forged his age release.
By Lyle's own admittance he was far from being a natural! That poor car died a miserable death!
After that first experience Lyle knew he was going to have to get some income so he started working for Performance Machine in Manhattan and immediately found out there was more to this racing thing than what he knew. So the next several years he put together a few more Street Stocks and raced very sparingly at Junction City and a few big road trips to Salina.
In the summer of '94 Lyle purchased his first Modified from John "Toot" Craig and he along with Todd Stadel painted and polished on what turned out to be one of the ugliest mods on record, "the Pink Panther". After only a few races they had to redo it just to save face.
Not very competitive but having fun, he worked his way up by wheeling and dealing to better cars and better equipment. By the summer of '98 Lyle had become way more consistent and actually won a few races at Plaza Speedway.
Things started to click for Lyle in '99. He had bought a new BMS Modified and was very competitive at Junction City, winning several features and getting some top 4's at Salina.
Starting in 2000 Lyle teamed up with Greg Junghans and help start the Shop Quik Racing Team. They started traveling to new venues such as Lakeside, Thunderhill, Knoxville, and Heartland Park. Most of these trips fell short of expectations but were essential in Lyle's learning of the face paced Modified sport. Teamed with Marc Robe, Lyle will be the first to admit there were no dull moments for the Shop Quik team!
2002 brought a turning point for Lyle. Armed with a Jet Mod and running out of his own shop, Lyle was able to pick up wins at Deshler Nebraska and Salina as well as Heartland Park. He had top 5's at bigger events including 2 runner-ups to Clint Bowyer at Lakeside and a 3rd place run at the Turkey Nationals in Longview, Texas and a top ten at the Harris Clash at Knoxville in July.
Over the last few years you could catch Lyle driving Late Models as well as Modifieds and even a Super Truck that he ran twice. With his newest venture becoming a Dad, Lyle has pulled back the reins on traveling as much. Maybe a winter trip to Phoenix or Texas once in a while but mostly considers himself a hobbyist and enjoys running at local tracks, his favorite being Heartland Park. |
